Fiber Cost Divergence: What It Means for Molded Pulp Packaging

The pulp market in early July is not moving in one clear direction. Instead, it is becoming more divided. Wood pulp remains weak, bamboo pulp has risen sharply, while bagasse pulp and straw pulp are relatively stable. For molded pulp packaging, this divergence is important because raw material choice is becoming a strategic decision, not just a sustainability decision.

Wood pulp is still under pressure. SHFE pulp futures stayed around RMB 4,700-4,800 per tonne, with narrow daily movement and limited buying momentum. Although port inventories have declined for three consecutive weeks, the total inventory level remains high at about 2.30 million tonnes. This means the market has not shifted into a real shortage. Downstream paper mills are still buying mainly for immediate needs, and the rebound in softwood pulp looks more technical than demand-driven.

This matters because wood pulp-based molded pulp packaging may benefit from short-term cost stability, but suppliers should not assume strong upward pricing power. For projects that require consistent fiber quality, clean appearance, and stable forming performance, wood pulp is still useful. However, the current market suggests that cost negotiation and inventory timing remain important.

Bamboo pulp is showing the opposite pattern. Prices in Southwest China have reportedly risen by around RMB 1,100-1,300 per tonne from recent lows, driven by substitution demand, mill maintenance, and stronger downstream demand from paper bags and specialty papers. This shows that bamboo pulp is gaining attention as an alternative fiber, but the recent increase also creates a risk: if the price rise is driven mainly by short-term supply limits, buyers need to be careful about locking in costs too late.

For molded pulp packaging, bamboo pulp may still be attractive for brands that want a strong renewable-material story. But it may not always be the best cost choice, especially when the project is price-sensitive or requires large-scale stable supply. Bamboo pulp should be considered where brand positioning, fiber identity, and product value can support the higher material cost.

Bagasse pulp is in a more balanced position. Current prices are relatively stable, while supply is supported by established sugarcane-based production regions such as Guangxi. Compared with some wood pulp grades, bagasse pulp can offer a clearer cost advantage while still fitting well with molded pulp applications. This makes it a practical option for foodservice packaging, trays, and other molded fiber products where cost, sustainability, and production stability all matter.

Straw pulp may be the most cost-effective option, especially for molded pulp applications that do not require a premium surface finish. With straw fiber prices remaining stable and agricultural residue collection systems becoming more organized, straw pulp can support lower-cost packaging solutions. Its market scale is still smaller, but for the right product category, it can provide a useful balance between cost control and non-wood fiber positioning.

The key takeaway is that molded pulp packaging should not treat all “eco-friendly fibers” as the same. Each fiber has a different cost structure, supply risk, forming performance, and brand value. Wood pulp may offer consistency. Bamboo pulp may offer a stronger material story but with higher price volatility. Bagasse pulp provides a balanced commercial option. Straw pulp offers cost efficiency for suitable applications.

For brand owners and packaging buyers, this means material selection should start earlier in the project. Before confirming a molded pulp design, customers should consider the product value, target cost, surface requirements, order volume, and supply stability. In a divided pulp market, good packaging decisions come from matching the right fiber to the right product, not simply choosing the most sustainable-sounding material.
